Unified Sports

Unified Physical Education is a course designed for students with a firm grasp on basic sports skills who are interested in developing leadership skills and learning to work with a special population. Students enrolled in Unified PE are paired with students with intellectual and/or physical disabilities that are of similar age and/or matched by sport skill ability. As a pair, students develop skills in various sports and finish each unit with a culminating activity. The transformative power of sports to instill confidence, improve health, and inspire a sense of competition is at the core of what Unified PE programs strive to instill.

Unified Sports is a registered program of Special Olympics. The transformative power of sports to instill confidence, improve health, and inspire a sense of competition is at the core of what Special Olympics does. The Unified Sports program combines approximately equal numbers of athletes with and without an intellectual disability on sports teams for training and competition. Unified Sports teams are placed in competitive divisions based on their skill abilities, ranging from training divisions (focused on skill-learning) to high-level competition.
